If you are confident, you are beautiful.

Hi all! My name is Sarah and I am the owner of Pip’s Boutique. I will be your main gal behind writing this blog, which I am super excited for! My main goal is to talk about tips, tricks, outfit ideas, and all that fun stuff to help guide you toward a wardrobe you can get excited about!

But for my very first entry, I feel it very important to address the issue of our bodies, and self-confidence! Now I’ve worked in the retail industry for 15 years, I in no way consider myself an expert but I have been working closely with ladies’ day in and day out for a very long time and it just amazes me how down we get on ourselves. We as women are our harshest critics, and often times to others as well. So, I just feel the desire to tell you ALL how beautiful each and every one of you are, and to STOP comparing yourselves!! (I know, I know easier said than done)

We have this sign on our back mirror at the store that says: “If you are confident, then you are beautiful!” It’s located RIGHT next to the fitting rooms for a reason! Since taking over Pip’s 4 years ago, that has been my main mission for the store. Helping women find their confidence, helping them feel sexy in their own way, and just overall helping them feel good about themselves! We live in such a photoshop age where everything can be filtered, blurred etc.., I just want a place for women to come, feel comfortable, and leave feeling better than when they came in!

I’ve put together some little pointers that I use myself and what I usually offer as some good hints/tricks to feel better and more confident about yourself, or the outfit you are wearing:

  1. Don’t underestimate the power of Spanx
Now I know there are a lot of you out there that have this misconceived notion that Spanx is uncomfortable! Well they aren’t! Not if you are getting the proper size, and the right style for you! Like everything else, you NEED to try on multiple styles and bring in 2 different sizes! There is the perfect fit for you, we promise. You just might have to dig a little more than others. I mean they have everything, bras, panties, shorts, slips, bustiers, camis, leggings, jeans it goes on and on. So, there is definitely a style for you! Don’t be shy, let us help you! We know our stuff here at Pip’s and pretty much have tried them all! I am a devout Spanx wearer! I have probably every kind imaginable. I am one of those people who just love them! Plus, I am an avid hater of panty-lines, bra lines, basically anything lines that will show through on clothing. So, unless I’m going commando you bet your booty I have Spanx on!

  2. Tinted moisturizer or sunless tanning lotion
I know I’m not alone in thinking this, but I think we all look a little better, or at least feel a bit better when we have some color on our arms or legs! So, ladies if you aren’t showing off your legs, or arms because you feel too pasty (especially if you live in Upstate New York!) try sunless tanner or a lotion that has a little sparkle/glitter in it! I’m partial to Jergens Natural Glow Firming lotion. This lotion doesn’t have the nasty smell that comes with most sunless tanners which is a huge plus for me, and you get a nice gradual tan PLUS it firms up my jiggly thighs!  Not sure if the firming component actually works, but mentally I believe it does which in return gives me a little bit more confidence!

  3. Take care of your skin
I never really grasped this one until I was 25 or so. I’ve always felt like I had a decent complexion…until I got my first facial! I mean WHAT a difference! My face was literally glowing afterwards! I was in awe, and hooked ever since. Now I don’t go every 3 months like they recommend, because frankly I just don’t have the time or always the extra money. But twice a year is good for me and it’s amazing the difference it makes! My makeup goes on better, it helps fight/prevent wrinkles, and my pores are smaller! Can’t really argue with that!

  4. Know your body
Spend some time in the mirror. And look, seriously look at yourself. What body shape are you? What are the things you like about yourself? What don’t you like about yourself? Once you can answer these questions honestly, and can accept your flaws, you are going to be a more confident and happier person! It’ll also help you for when you are shopping, when you know what your body looks good in, or which styles flatter you. If you can’t figure out what shape you are, or what your best attributes are, no worries, it’ll come but in the meantime, get a second opinion. Ask a trusted girlfriend, or stop in to see us. Having another set of eyes, that doesn’t see the things you see always help! We can see what you might be blind to!

Now my last point is the most important one! It may not help you ladies now, but it will help your daughters, nieces, granddaughters, basically any young girl you know. So please pay attention!

  5. Do not I repeat DO NOT harshly criticize young girls on their appearance
This one is HUGE! I’d say 8 times out of 10 on why a customer believes they are fat, or ugly, or will not wear a certain color, or will not try on a certain type of style is because of their MOTHER! Yes, I am talking about women ages 25-60 (which is our clienteles ages) who will say to us, “Oh no I could never wear that color, my mother always told me I looked ugly in that shade.” Or they come into the store saying “My mother always told me I’m too large/small to wear something like that” As if magazines, the internet, and TV didn’t give us women enough self-esteem issues, our mothers have to?! And it’s usually not something that the mother recently said to them either, it’s what they said when their child was in middle school or high school. Our bodies change, we go through stages, what might have looked horrible on us in high school, may look amazing on us today! Your hairstyle can change, even your coloring, so that shade of green that your mom said you looked ugly in, now looks fantastic on you!

I have to beg some of my customers to keep an open mind and to just trust me. I’ll give them a few things to try on that they wouldn’t have tried on ever before, and they come out surprised, because they look good in it! They’ll say to me “I would of never in a million years tried that on without your help.”

My main goal and concern at the store, is for ladies to look good and feel good! I’m not going to let you out of the store looking like a sack of potatoes!

So ladies, those harsh comments that you say/said to your young daughter, whether you meant it innocently or not can stick with her for a life time! So please watch what you say to her. When it comes to body image, show love, build up their confidence, tell them what looks amazing on them, tell them how strong and beautiful they are. Focus on their attributes, not their flaws!

Unless they are trying to sneak out of the house in nothing but a bikini, then by all means go for it and yell at them all you want, that’s a whole different story!

Just remember we are all beautiful in our own ways, and the more confidence you can rock the better you will feel, and the better everyone around you will feel!

Thanks for stopping by, and remember to give a compliment today!
